My name is Derek Ford. I was born and raised in Salt Lake City, UT, and to put it simply, I grew up a fat kid. By the time I was in 9th grade, I was over 200 lbs.

While I was fairly active, I battled weight for most of my life. I know what it’s like to be the heavy kid who gets teased in the locker room. I was always picked last for most sports activities. I know how painful and uncomfortable it is to be overweight.

I tried most fad diets and exercise equipment over the course of 15 years, and even became an avid cyclist. However, my weight always fluctuated but never fell below 200 lbs.

In 2006, on my 30th birthday, I peaked at 250 lbs. My back always ached, my knees and ankles were always sore, and most exercise was extremely uncomfortable. I had never run further than a mile without having to stop and walk – and even at that distance, I was sure I was going to die.

From there the uphill battle began.

Over the course of the next four years, I started making small, sustainable changes to my diet and lifestyle. I began researching minimalist running styles and made dramatic adjustments to my running form.

I began working with a personal trainer focusing on Functional Fitness and weight lifting, resulting in further improvement in athletic performance and positive changes in body composition.

Now, 80lbs lighter, I have a multitude of running, trail running, cycling, and triathlon events under my belt, ranging from 5ks to Full marathons and a Half Ironman. I feel stronger and more alive than ever before! I have a true passion for fitness & healthy living, and I love sharing that passion with others.

In 2012 I obtained my Personal Trainer Certification through the National Academy of Sports Medicine, and at the beginning of 2013 started Run Wild Fitness in Anchorage, AK.

I want to help others take the first step, as well as help those already headed in the right direction to achieve levels of performance they never thought possible. It’s about Quality of Life.

Not just adding Years to our Life…but adding Life to our Years!
